Having no redeeming quality whatsoever, The Cellar (2022) marked one of the lowest points of SXSW 2022, leaving behind only the worst horror of the year so far, Bitch Ass (2022). We might have to wait until Elisha Cuthbert, one of the horror muses of the early 2000s, returns with a proper bang.
I watched The Cellar (2022) without knowing that it was based on a short film. However, interestingly, I noted about halfway through that the part with the ten steps to the cellar could have been an amazing short film. And it turns out that it actually was.
Currently streaming on Shudder, The Cellar is a new horror flick that has a lot of promise. Unfortunately, it falls down in some key areas so while there is the potential for something dark and scary, you might be reluctant to open the door to the cellar in the first place!
In the process, she discovers a mathematical equation that, once recited, opens up a gateway to Hell in the cellar. It soon becomes clear that this is where Ellie has ended up but as Keira tries to convince others of this, she realizes that she is alone in her conclusion. Her life goes from bad to worse when her husband and son become possessed and an ancient demon takes residence within her home.
The creepy cellar concept has been done quite a few times, but this one had a bit of a different twist on it, and it was executed well. A lot of what made this movie good came from the atmosphere and tension building. The lighting and score were well-done and there were some scenes with great tension and atmosphere. Unfortunately, these scenes were few and far between and overshadowed by some areas in the writing that we thought could have used some help. The Cellar is a decent horror film but a lot of the movie is slowly paced with a few good scenes mixed in here and there and takes too long to deliver.
In THE CELLAR, Keira Woods' (Elisha Cuthbert) daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house. She soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family's souls forever.
Digressing back to the story, Keira begins to notice symbols, noises, and odd occurrences that point to more than just an house and its quirks. Investigations lead her to the discover details about the former family and the intent of the owner Fetherston who was experimenting with the idea of portals and dimensions. This all happens to be rooted in the fact that her daughter went missing shortly after moving in. Her son, apparently next of the list, is also becoming enchanted by aspects of the house and its rather odd spooky cellar. More importantly is the symbols carved into he steps which point to more than just decorative touches.

In the last scene of the film, when Keira opens the main door, there was a stair that goes up to another dimension. This symbolizes that they did not escape the evil world. How does Dr. John Fetherson makes the cellar into a portalRose reveals about her father and the beasts of the house. Her father was a renowned physicist named Dr. John Fetherson.
All indications are that there is something seriously wrong in the house, and everybody should get out. As the evidence mounts, it should have taken very little to heed the abandon ship signal. She connects the dots and rightly suspects the equation carved into the cellar floor to be something more than just construction notes. She finds that the previous owner of the home was a brilliant physicist who disappeared mysteriously in the house after modern medicine failed to save his ill son, and created a mathematical formula that could save his boy at the risk of damning his entire family.
The woods family have moved to a new house, Ellie gets locked in the cellar and hears footsteps. when she gets out she is very mad. that night something lost is in the cellar, Ellie went in while calling her mother she counts ten steps, as she counts she passes out and died. when they saved Ellie, they try escaping, but there is an infinite staircase, they were dead the whole time.
When Keira Woods' daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house in the country, she soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she will have to face or risk losing her family's souls forever.
A concept that sounds really cool, a cellar door that leads into a a hell dimension, this couldve been a over the top, fun sam raimi type horror but was just dull. It was predictable, bland and unintentionally funny. a waste of a good idea.
The Cellar is a haunted house story mixed with a mystery. The first portion of the film focuses on building tension with small scenes that show Ellie becoming more and more afraid of the house, and the cellar in particular. These moments are pretty well done, and thanks to some long, lingering camera shots, some creepy music, and well crafted sets, the house does quickly get a spooky vibe to it. Even when Ellie disappears and the film takes on more of a mystery vibe to it there are some pretty creepy sequences scattered throughout. One in particular made my skin crawl. 59ce067264
